Business Analysts in Demand

May 24, 2008

Business analysts with derivatives experience and knowledge of exotic products can expect a higher boost in salaries.

Source: Click Here

Despite the global economic backdrop, demand for business analysts is on the rise. According to The JM Group’s quarterly salary report, firms’ emphasis on front-office derivatives experience and knowledge of exotic products across commodities, interest rates, credit and equities has driven a 5 percent boost in business analyst salaries.

The London-based IT recruitment firm reports that, overall, IT salaries in the U.K. have remained stable, climbing 1.2 percent, since the end of 2007, although hiring has slowed. The JM Group notes that responsibility for authorizing new hires generally is being moved up the corporate chain, slowing the recruiting process.

Increasing Concentration

May 24, 2008

What is concentration?

Concentration is the ability to focus one’s attention onto something. To centralize. To draw together.

The reason I choose to define the word concentration in the beginning of my article is that once we understant the true meaning of concentration, we will be able to concentrate better.

The number one reason that the vast magority of people around the globe are unable to concentrate intensly is because of distractions. Distractions that are moving your focus away from your goal. Splitting your focus. Put simply, trying to do more than one thing at once. This reduces efficiency.

In order to concentrate better you need the correct environment. This factor plays a huge role in your ability to concentrate. The most appropriate environment depends upon the person; usually it is somewhere in which you are seperated from people. Some place you find harmony and tranquility in which your brain can rest and you are able to use your maximum brain power.

Another important aspect that I wish to mention is that you should do 1 thing at a time! Do not try to do more than 1 thing at a time if you wish to be most productive.

Other tips on concentrating:

  • Common studies have found that during the early mornings when the brain is fresh and alert, one can concentrate better. So use this time to your full advantage to attain whatever you desire. This will be your time to concentrate. Use it!
  • Use a little stickpad or notepad in which you can jot down your thoughts while you are working. This will allow you to come back to those thoughts once you are finished on whatever you have been working for.
  • Excercise! I can not stress the importance of this! Excercise releases stress, muscle tension and freshens your brain. You will find that after you excercise, you are able to concentrate on something for a longer period of time than you would usually be able to.
  • Make a daily schedule. Use this schedule to plan out your goals for the day. Doing this will increase your productivity during the day and reduce foreign thoughts while you are concentrating on something. Allocate times for doing different things.
  • Bring in variety in whotever you are doing. You should not concentrate on 1 thing for more than 1 to 1 and half hours. This will reduce boredom.
  • Every once in a while take a few minutes of break and stretch your legs. Stand up, walk around!
  • Reward yourself. You will find that if you have something to look forward to if you accomplish a goal, it will motivate you to be more productive during your concentration time.
  • Eat healthy. This will keep your mind and body alert while you are concentrating. Heavy meals will direct your mind power in trying to digest the food that you have eaten. Eating healthy reduces this problem.
  • Concentrate with interested. If you find that you are interested in something, you will naturally concentrate on it better and become absorbed in it.

These are but just a few tips on how to concentrate better. The main thing is to relax, relieve yourself of anxiety, stress and work through your goal step-by-step! Each morning when you wake up or better, the nite before you go to sleep, write down a list of short-term goals that you wish to accomplish during the next day. This allows your brain to subconciously work through the goals while you are asleep! Seriously!

Tip for computer users: The Workrave program is a nifty program that monitors the usage on your computer and hints to you as a user when you should take a break. Following the rules of this program is known to increase the producitivity of your work on the computer. More details & download of Workrave

Believe it or not, the mind is an extraordinary organ! Learning to use it in the most efficient manner as possible and you will be able to accomplish anything!

Happy Concentrating,

Workrave

May 20, 2008

What is Workrave?

Workrave is a program that assists in the recovery and prevention of Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI). This is a condition which is caused by repetitive movements over time. RSI is a type of injury where soft tissue in the body, such as muscles, nerves, tendons, and joints become irritated or inflamed.

This program frequently alerts you to take micro-pauses, rest breaks and restricts you to your daily limit hence reducing the risk of RSI.

Workrave’s main purpose is to prevent RSI but I find that it increases my productivity because I can concentrate better. It times your computer activity and tells you when to take a break and even what exercises to do and when. When I discipline myself to follow it’s prompts, I can concentrate on my tasks much more efficiently. When I ignore the software, my productivity goes way down. I put this down to being able to concentrate better during the productive times because I can switch off during the breaks I take. - Workrave user

Motopower – solor-powered cellphone kiosks for Uganda women

May 19, 2008

Mobile phones are connecting people around the globe like never before, but the simple fact remains that they don’t work without electricity. In Uganda, which has one of the lowest levels of electricity in Africa, Motorola has launched an initiative to provide solar recharging stations that can be run by local, entrepreneurial women.

Launched last year, Motorola’s Motopower project has brought 55 solar-powered kiosks to Uganda that offer free mobile phone charging to local consumers. Each kiosk is charged by a 55-watt inverted solar panel and can charge up to 20 phones at a time. The women who run the kiosks, meanwhile, are also equipped to sell handsets and operator SIM cards and to provide repair services. For local people without their own phones, the kiosks effectively function as a local “phone booth” for making occasional calls as well.

The initiative was designed to empower entrepreneurial women by providing them with the foundations to manage their own sustainable businesses. As part of a start-up package, each entrepreneur is given four Motorola handsets and a business skills training course. Nikesh Patel, senior sales director for Motorola Africa’s mobile devices business, explains: “The Motopower initiative is the first of its kind to exist for women in Africa. Through this program, we are giving women the opportunity to run their own business, learn valuable entrepreneurial skills and generate a positive income.”

Of course, besides empowering women and helping Ugandans stay connected, the project will likely increase Motorola’s share of the local market as well. It’s a win-win-win, and one for other global corporate citizens to emulate as often as they can!

Road to Riches… Part 1

May 19, 2008

Did you know that you can have anything you want? Close your eyes for a moment and picture it. It could be anything. Just picture having it. Listen to the sounds, reach out your hands and touch it, breathe in deeply and smell it.

‘The world is your oyster’. Those simple 5 words were written a long time ago, and yet we are only beginning to understand the meaning of it.

What differenciates us from those on top? We look upon them with envy and jelousy. We blame and accuse. But we never stop and look behind them. What led to their success? What got them to were they are?

This may come to you as a suprise but believe it or not, we all have it within us!

The first question that you would need to ask yourself is..what exactly is it that you want from life? what are your dreams? your goals? your ambitions?

Stop for a moment in your busy life and think about this!
Each person should be able to come up with a unique answer.

People arn’t successfull because of their high intelligence or money. Ok, yes we agree that such things will increase your chances..but then only to a certain extent. The real barrier that seperates those people that are really on top to others, is Passion! Hard work! How far are YOU willing to go to get what YOU WANT? This is the one most critical factor that all successfull people understand. How badly do you want it?

In todays times, people have become lazy. According to Google’s definition, the word “lazy” refers to “moving slowly and gently; “up a lazy river”; “lazy white clouds”; “at a lazy pace”.
Now in order for us to achieve our goals, to become successful, we need to move away from this ideology, out of the comfort zone.

People generally prefer to remain within the comfort zone and the main reason for this is FEAR! The fear of taking risks, the fear of moving forward, fear of things around us, fear of what might not happen!

Pushing through to leave your comfort zone is hard work. Nature demonstrates that graphically for us. The chick pecking its way out of the shell, the butterfly struggling through the cacoon. All of this illustrates how struggle is necessary in order to bring life, growth and SUCCESS.

The good news is that once we have faced our fears and found our ways, we now find ourselves in a new world. Everytime we push out and live out of our comfort zone we find we will never be the same. GROWTH HAPPENS!

A little idea that I once read about to live a better life or might I say a more fuller life, is that each day, you should do something or say something that are afraid off. This technique may sound simple, but trust me, it is one of the most productive techniques out there.

So you say you are ready now? Ready to conquer the world! Ready to start moving out of the comfort zone! Ready to start living life? GOOD! Realisation is the most important step! You are now part of the selected few who have realised this bit of information.

What do you need to do next you say? My advice to you is:

1. Clean out your desk completely.
2. Take out a clean sheet of paper and pen.
3. On the top write “GOALS”.
4. Below that write down 2 sub-headings labelled “Short Term Goals” & “Long Term Goals”.
5. Now write down what you would like from the world in those according headings.
6. Stick that piece of paper in a place that you cross often.
7. Each morning when you wake up, turn to that page and remind yourself of your goals. VISION IT! EMBRACE IT!

Close your eyes and start dreaming my friend. The world is a catalog awaiting your requests. All you have to do is want it sincerely.
